Affordable Health Insurance An Oxymoron

March 15, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

For over a year now the current administration has debated, manipulated, and done everything within its power and beyond to pass a health care reform bill in the United States. while politicians argue that merits of health care, Americans are paying the bill. Regardless of whether or not a health care bill reform package becomes law in America, there are many people who are looking for affordable health insurance coverage now. Never mind the 30 million people who have no insurance, even those who can’t afford health insurance find the premiums cost prohibitive.

Finding affordable coverage is never easy and restrictions imposed by individual states make it more difficult. Unlike auto insurance which can be sold across state lines, health coverage is severely limited in individual states. Each state seemingly has a law that prohibits many companies from marketing their products.

The best place to find affordable health insurance is obviously with your employer in some type of group coverage. unemployment being at record levels doesn’t help the situation for those without a job. Cobra insurance is available for those in transition or in between jobs, but again the price is generally more than most people can afford, especially for those without a job. If you have a pre-existing condition the likelihood that you will be able to afford insurance if you can find it is minimal.

It would appear that the term affordable should not be coupled with the term health insurance in this country.no one knows all the answers for solving the health insurance dilemma in the United States. the government surely cannot afford to grant yet another entitlement to its people. Forcing Americans who can’t afford insurance to paying for that other Americans cannot afford doesn’t seem wise.

Starting with some type of program that doesn’t cost the government money or perhaps implementing a program or a multiple programs on a state-by-state basis as a test seems cost-effective cost-effective. tort reform would also reduce the cost of health insurance, because frivolous lawsuits would not be able to be filed. In the meantime if you are looking for affordable health insurance coverage, and you are young and healthy, it’s likely that you will be able to find adequate coverage for your needs.
